The Unsecrets of a Junior Teacher

Ongoing professional learning

I will never know it all.  With so many different students, so many different teaching strategies, such complex human brains, and ever changing resources and technology, I can never reach the end of my learning.  Even if I did, I’d probably need to start right back at the beginning and re-learn all the stuff I’d forgotten.  Teachers are society’s experts on what kids’ learning needs are, so I must be constantly striving to stay up to date.  It’s part of the challenge of teaching, and for me, professional learning renews my excitement about my job.  Not only do I need to keep learning about HOW to teach, I have to be constantly learning about WHAT I’m teaching!  Now if only there was a few more hours in the day…

How I demonstrate ongoing professional learning

  1. This website is an example of my ongoing professional learning.  Not only do I want a venue for collaboration with other teachers, but I also want to develop my website-building skills that would allow me to create a class webpage for my students for whom computers are increasingly a central part of their culture.
  2. The fact that I am taking this course also shows that I am committed to growing through learning.
  3. Many of the files posted on this site have been improved from their original as I have learned from the feedback of others.

To help me develop a more effective practice, I have reviewed the EQAO website.  My goal is to learn how to better prepare my students for standardized testing.

I could also demonstrate ongoing professional learning with a list of all the professional development activities I have participated in recently (books, workshops etc.) and a summary of what I learned there and how I would apply it to my practice.
