The Unsecrets of a Junior Teacher

Commitment to students

The reason I teach is kids. Teaching is about helping every student to achieve their best, to feel valuable and valued, and to have successful futures. I believe that every child is worthwhile, regardless of race, religion, culture, and ability. I value the diversity that exists in human kind and encourage respect and appreciation for our differences in my class and in my own pedagogy.

How I demonstrate commitment to students

I am sensitive to factors that influence student learning, such as differences in areas of intelligence as well as learning styles.  I try to include many options for students in my lessons and assessments to allow them to learn in a way that is most appropriate for them.

  1. Multiple Intelligences in a Summative Task
  2. A Learning Styles Lesson Plan

I care about my students and I want them to leave my class more prepared to lead a rewarding life in the future, which includes both having healthy relationships and contributing to society.  As a result, character education is important in my classroom.  One of the things I expressly teach is social skills.

  1. Social Skills Mini-Lesson Plan

I think all students should be treated equitably and with respect, so I create an atmosphere where everyone feels accepted and valued.  These are a couple of examples of ways that I keep a positive and constructive atmosphere in my class.

  1. A Strategy for Inclusion
  2. Constructive Feedback
